2020 CAREERS IN PAEDIATRICS SERIES
Mr Ashour will be discussing his career as a consultant paediatric surgeon and urologist at OUH.
OSOP invites you to our first talk of the new academic year!
Dr Joanna Fairhurst has kindly agreed to speak to OSOP about paediatric radiology and careers in the field.
Dr Fairhurst is a consultant paediatric radiologist. She trained as a general radiologist in the UK, before completing a fellowship in paediatric radiology in the USA. She now works for the University Hospital Southampton Trust.
Dr Fairhurst sub-specialises in paediatric musculoskeletal radiology, particularly in the areas of skeletal dysplasia and non-accidental injury. She also has an interest in education, and lectures nationally and internationally on paediatric radiology.

CONFERENCE – THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL CHILD HEALTH: BEYOND THE MDGS
WHEN: Saturday 21st November, 10.00 – 16.30

The conference will be discussing how we can move forward on issues relating to the Millennium Development Goals4, 5, and 6: reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS.

Careers in Paediatrics: Insights from a Paediatric Trainee and a Palliative Care Specialist
WHEN: Wednesday 3rd June 2015, 5.45 for a 6pm start

The Oxford Society of Paediatrics is very pleased to announce our next talk.We will be joined by Peter Sedgwick, who works at Helen and Douglas House, and Laura Nohavicka, a paediatric trainee.
The event will begin with a talk from Laura on working in paediatrics as a junior doctor and careers in paediatrics, followed by a question and answer session. We will then hear from Peter who will be talking about the challenges of working in paediatric palliative care.
There will be copious amounts of food and drink.
Please arrive at 5.45 for a 6pm start.

Oxford Mail OX5 RUN

OSOP is taking on the OX5 RUN to raise money for the Oxford Chidlren’s Hospital! The 5 mile run around the beautiful grounds of Blenheim palace is one of the Children’s Hospital’s biggest fundraisers and last year raised a record-breaking £114,000. So join us on the 29th March to help raise money for a great cause!

Dr Simon Drysdale will be joining us to talk about risk factors for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infection – the most important pathogen causing hospitalisation in infants in the UK. We will look at and discuss papers on lung function and genetics (see below).

OSOP Presents: Ten Years in Nepal – Preventing Meningitis and Pneumonia

OSOP and HOnc Soc present Dr Kate Wheeler: Reflections on a Career in Paediatric Oncology

We are delighted to host Dr Kate Wheeler, consultant paediatric oncologist to share with us her “Reflections on a career in Paediatric Oncology”.
The talk will commence at 17.30 in Seminar Room 2, West Wing, Children’s Hospital.
There will be ample refreshments to keep you going after a long day – and the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the talk. We hope you will join us to find out more about a sub-specialty that many of us will have encountered little of thus far in our training
OSOP and OSM present: Dr Hilary Cass
WHEN: Wednesday 4th February 2015, 5.30pm
We are delighted to host Dr Hilary Cass – President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health – who will be speaking on ‘Bridging the gap between primary and secondary care health services for children.’
The event will start at 5.30pm and will be held in the George Pickering Education Centre (GPEC) at the John Radcliffe Hospital. There will be ample refreshments and opportunities to ask questions at the end of the talk.
Dr Cass qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, London in 1982. She first trained as a general paediatrician, before undertaking higher specialist training in the field of disability.
Over a 15-year period she was Consultant in Paediatric Disability at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she also held a number of senior management roles, including Director of Postgraduate Medical Education and Deputy Medical Director.
She has held several regional and national roles in medical education and policy development, including Regional Adviser for the RCPCH, Registrar of the RCPCH, and Head of School of Paediatrics for London.
Dr Cass is strongly committed to bridging the gap between primary and secondary care health services for children, and addressing the fragmentation and poor communication that makes life so much harder for families caring for a child with a disability.

OSOP presents: Careers in Paediatrics

The first OSOP event of the new term is unmissable for anyone interested in a career in paediatrics! Consultant Dr Alison Shefler and trainee Dr Peter Sidgwick will be sharing their varied experiences in this exciting speciality, and will be giving advice on how to build your career from medical school onwards!
Dr. Alison Shefler has been a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care at the John Radcliffe Hospital since 1997. She qualified from the University of Toronto in 1984, initially pursuing GP training before switching to Paediatrics at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. She trained in Paediatric Intensive Care at Camperdown Children’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia and at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Dr Shefler is committed to education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and currently holds the post of Training Programme Director for Oxford Deanery.
Dr. Peter Sidgwick has had an exciting career, commencing with a degree in Geography at Oxford and working for a Russian oil company, before studying Medicine at Glasgow University. house jobs in Edinburgh and came to Oxford for ST1. Since coming to Oxford he has completed a diploma in Paediatric Palliative Medicine, and currently works at Helen and Douglas House as well as at the John Radcliffe Hospital as a Paediatric Registrar.

Interested in going abroad for paediatrics? Are you planning an elective? Perhaps you’re considering a career spending time overseas?
OSOP is hosting an evening designed to answer all your questions on the theme of working abroad, from medical school placements and electives, to training programmes and careers outside the UK.
Dr Peter Sullivan and Dr Manish Sadarangani will be talking to us about their inspiring, globe-spanning careers, followed by a few short presentations from current 5th and 6th years focusing on their experiences on paediatric placements in a range of countries.
We’ll follow this with a Q and A session designed to help you make the best of time overseas!
